NOTICE TO WESTFORD WATER USERS: OUTDOOR WATERING CONSERVATION POLICY


	The Westford Water Department encourages residents to comply with the voluntary Even/Odd Outdoor Watering Policy. The Outdoor Watering Policy will be in effect May 1 through October 31, 2010. Properties with even numbered street addresses may water on even days of the month, and properties with odd numbered street addresses may water on odd days of the month. The policy can be found in the General Bylaws of the Town under Chapter 169 (Chapter 169.7, sections D through H). Most lawn experts agree that many residents over-water their lawns and offer the following advice: established lawns only need 1 inch of water per week; water in the early morning or evening when evaporation rates are lowest; do not water during rain; and avoid over watering, which actually creates a weak grass plant that cannot tolerate drought or pests. The best advice is to install a rain sensor or a soil moisture sensor. These devices range in price from $25-$250. Rain sensors do just that; they override your irrigation system schedule when it rains. Soil moisture detectors control irrigation based on the amount of moisture at the roots. If the soil is dry, the device will operate the irrigation system until the desired ground moisture is reached. Either of these devices will help eliminate unnecessary water usage.
