The Town of Westford, along with Maine Drilling and Blasting, has received a Notice of Responsibility from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection regarding the release of Perchlorate into the environment due to blasting during the construction of the new Highway Garage site in 2004.
Although the Town has taken proactive steps since the release in 2004, the Town will be required to file an Immediate Response Action Plan within 60 days, which will provide Mass DEP with written documentation of the Town’s efforts. Part of that response plan will be to work collaboratively with the Westford Board of Health and retest some private wells in the area, which had been tested in 2004 and 2005.
The Town is confident that the steps taken three years ago will do much to resolve the matter and is willing to work diligently with DEP to bring this issue to closure.
