Westford Paramedics Attend Sim Lab Training

December 2011- All Paramedics attended training session at Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston. The three hour session included a review of high acuity / low frequency procedures such as difficult airway management, chest decompression, and crichothyroidotomy. Training scenarios were developed by Stratus simulation specialists using high tech simulation mannequins.

A pediatric respiratory arrest scenario was given; in real time paramedics had to manage the airway appropriately, establish intravenous access and administer medication when the baby's heart rate dropped to a dangerously low level.  Another scenario was a man with a knife impaled in his neck (picture attached). This is a very complex scenario where the impaled object had to be stabilized as the patient also needed advanced airway management.

All scenarios were performed in real time, and then the group met to "debrief" or discuss the event in detail. This is the most important part of the training. The entire event is broken down and discussed piece by piece. We discuss what was done well and what could have been done better.

The Staff that worked with us included the following:
Dr. Charles Pozner - Medical director
Dr. Laura Janneck
Andrew Camerato - Operations supervisor

Firefighter Paramedic Tim Bellemore
